The Gift of Laughter

Most adults take life far too seriously.  With our hectic paces, it is easy to forget to slow down and simply have fun.  Even children are being diagnosed with mood disorders as their ratio of worry to play is becoming unbalanced.  It has been a long, cold winter.  It makes me chuckle though when I think in a few months we will all be complaining about how hot it is.

LOLMental illness, poverty and abuse are no laughing matter.  No one is immune.  Life’s greatest challenges can strike anyone, even a neighbour or a loved one.  These are the clients we serve.  Our goal at Family Counselling Centre of Cambridge and North Dumfries is not only to empower these individuals to heal and find hope but also to educate and inspire the community as a whole to live emotionally healthier lives.

In recognition of the end of this long, hard winter and the growing need for people to lighten up, we at Family Counselling Centre are thrilled to be showcasing a very funny man at our annual event this month.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, there are numerous reasons why laughter might just be the best medicine including:

  • Laughter activates the Immune SystemLaughter
  • Laughter decreases stress Hormones
  • Laughter relaxes our muscles
  • Laughter reduce pains & aches
  • Laughter exercises internal organs (Heart, lungs etc)
  • Laughter stabilizes blood pressure
  • Laughter cleanses the Respiratory System

Mark Stibich, PhD via, describes how even the simple act of smiling shares many of the same benefits of laughter, as well as makes us more attractive, changes our mood, releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin and makes us seem more successful.

When is the last time you had a good giggle fest? You know the kind where your cheeks hurt and everything and anything seemed funny. Music also has the power to change our frame of mind and leave us feeling more uplifted or energized.

What better combination then music and comedy to enhance our moods and renew our sense of hope?  We hope you will consider investing in your health on Thursday April 18, 2013, for a night of entertainment with award winning Singing Impressionist, Mat Gauthier. We assure you the money raised will make a lasting difference in your community.

There are still lots of tickets available.  Doors open at 6pm for the silent auction.
